Woot!
I made the first seed order for next year.
This year I’m ordering from rareseeds.com a.k.a. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Last year I had too many issues with quality from our local supplier. It’s frustrating to have bush beans that turn out to be climbers. I don’t want that again.
I haven’t used Baker Creek before, so I can’t say good or ill of them. I do like the expanded catalog I ordered. I also like the online wishlist that you can build at rareseeds.
What have I ordered? Just tomato seeds. I’ve ordered three envelopes of everything. I plan on getting two of the envelopes started and holding the third back in case I lose my starts.
I ordered 8 kinds of tomatoes. I would have ordered 9 but one is out of stock. Here’s the list…
Placero |
Henderson’s Pink Ponderosa Tomato |
Brandywine Tomato |
Thessaloniki Tomato |
Principe Borghese Tomato |
Barnes Mountain Yellow Tomato |
Yellow Pear Tomato |
Hartman’s Yellow Gooseberry Tomato |
Chocolate Pear Tomato (out of stock) |
I plan on growing them in trellises the way I saw SoilBorn do it last season.
More to come.

How did your planting go? Ive been thinking about ordering from Baker. My local seed company is Sustainable Seed Co, http://sustainableseedco.com/organic-cosmic-purple-carrot-seed.html these are some of my favorites. Any issues with what you planted? Thanks!
We didn’t try those carrots–I wish we had. They’re beautiful!
Our land is so nutrient poor. We’ve built up the soil enough that we finally got tomatoes last year. Onions and beans do fine, but the corn only grows 3 feet high and none of the tubers planted (carrots, mangle, etc) ever developed other than small leaves.
