What first? Planning your homestead

I’ve been asked several times now about the order in which things should be done first or in what order when planning your homestead.  My reply is that you should do as much as you can as soon as you can.

That’s not so helpful for some people.  Here’s a list of things to be worked on, from easiest to most difficult.

  1. Soil.  It’s easy to change your soil.  Plant some seeds, throw some chickens or pigs on it.  These changes are fleeting if not maintained though.  Think about the rest of the list and how easy/hard they are to effect.
  2. Subdividing/Fences.
  3. Structures
  4. Trees
  5. Roads/Access
  6. Water Supply
  7. Landscape (Terraces, dams, swales, etc.)

I could write more about this but someone else has already done a much better job.
